Behind the Scenes of Recruitment: A View from CBC’s Front Desk

Article by Jasmine Lewers.

Working at the front desk of a recruitment agency gives me a unique view of the recruitment process. I see the phone calls, interviews, changing schedules and ongoing conversations that happen behind every successful placement.

Before joining CBC Staff Selection, I had not fully realised just how much work happens behind the scenes. From getting to know candidates and understanding what clients need, to coordinating interviews, providing updates and navigating last-minute changes, there is a great deal of care involved in every placement.

From my perspective at the front desk, recruitment is about much more than matching people to jobs. It is about relationships, trust, communication and bringing the right people and opportunities together.

Working in recruitment is fast-paced, people-focused, and every day is different.

More Than Reviewing Resumes
A recruitment consultant’s day can involve everything from reviewing applications and interviewing candidates to advising clients on market conditions, coordinating interviews and managing offers.

They often encounter challenges throughout the day – interview schedules can change, candidate circumstances can shift, and hiring priorities can alter. Recruiters must be resilient and adaptable to navigate these changes professionally. The most successful recruiters are those who can manage evolving expectations and priorities while maintaining strong communication with clients, candidates, and
their team.

The Value Behind the Process
One of the biggest misconceptions about recruitment consultants is that they simply review and select resumes.

But every resume shortlist represents hours of reviewing applications, conducting interviews, assessing suitability, gathering market insights and providing guidance to both clients and candidates.

Recruitment is a professional service built on integrity. It is a service that only works when recruiters present opportunities and candidates accurately.

The goal is not to make the quickest placements, but rather, to ensure successful results long-term. Honesty and transparency remain at the heart of that process.

What Makes a Great Recruiter?
Recruitment consultants come from diverse professional backgrounds, often having previously worked in customer service, operations, administration or management. Regardless of their pathway into the profession, strong recruitment consultants are skilled communicators who are genuinely interested in people.

They know how to ask the right questions, listen carefully and provide honest advice. Recruiters are different to salespeople – they are not chasing numbers but creating outcomes that work for everyone. Most importantly, great recruiters understand that trust is earned by delivering on commitments.

Looking Beyond Skills and Experience
Though skills and experience are important considerations, successful recruitment requires knowledge beyond a resume and a job description.

To facilitate long-term success, recruiters must deeply understand both the candidate and the workplace. Cultural fit, communication style, career goals and team dynamics all play an important role.

This is why face-to-face conversations, workplace visits and meaningful client relationships remain such valuable parts of the recruitment process. Understanding an organisation’s culture and working environment allows recruiters to make recommendations that go far beyond what appears on paper.

Building Careers and Supporting Businesses
One of the most rewarding aspects of recruitment is the opportunity to make a genuine difference.

For candidates, a new role can represent career progression, greater flexibility, financial security or a fresh start. For employers, securing the right person can strengthen a team, improve productivity and contribute to long-term business success.

Being involved in these outcomes is what makes recruitment such a fulfilling profession. Behind every successful placement is a significant investment of time and care.

Finding Talent in a Competitive Market
Not every role is straightforward to fill.

Some positions require specialist skills, industry experience or a combination of qualities that can be difficult to find. In these situations, recruiters need to think creatively, leverage their networks and consider transferable skills that may not be immediately obvious.

In regional markets particularly, community connections and local knowledge often play a significant role in identifying high-quality candidates.

More Than Matching People to Jobs
At its core, recruitment is about relationships.

It’s about understanding the needs of businesses, recognising the strengths of individuals and creating connections that contribute to long-term success.

At CBC Staff Selection, we know that every placement has a story behind it. Our job is to provide the expertise, insight and support needed to bring the right people and opportunities together.
